Upon logging into ME, you will be greeted by the newspaper, The Universe Daily, and above it will be a bar, much like this one:
Entire menu bar
The buttons NAV, COM, INF, NWS, FRC, DOC, SYS are parts of the menu bar, a vital part of the game. From it, you can access many functions in the game.
  1. NAV (when landed on a planet):
    Navigation menu on planetPlanet - takes you to the status screen of the base you are docked on
    Galaxy Map - displays the galaxy map in a new window
  2. NAV (when in space):
    Navigation menu in spaceCurrent Sector - takes you to the Current Sector screen
    Local Map - displays the local map, an area of 5X5 sectors around your position
    Plot course - allows you to use the Plot Course system
    Galaxy Map - displays the galaxy map in a new window
  3. COM:
    Communication menuView messages - link to the View Messages screen, which views the messages sent to you, your alliance or everyone online
    Send messages - link to the Send Messages screen
    Online Forum - link to the Merchant Empires Forum
    Message alliance - opens a send message window, which sends a message to the alliance you are currently in
  4. INF:
    Information menuMerchant status - link to your statistics screen
    Merchant search - enables you to find another merchant (no, it does not reveal the location)
    Alliance status - takes you to your alliance's status screen
    Rankings - displays the rankings
    Requirements - displays the experience point requirements for reaching higher levels
    Highscores - shows the score chart of the game
    Currently online - tells you who is online at the moment
  5. NWS:
    News menuNewspaper - link to The Universe Daily
    Market News - market news shows which goods are being bought or sold in the galaxy, the global supply/demand rate, and the local price fluctuations (highest ever, lowest ever and current global price)
  6. FRC:
    Forces menuDrop one SD - drops one scout drone in the sector
    Drop all SDs - drops the maximum possible number of scout drones in the sector
    Pick up SDs - picks up the maximum possible number of scout drones from the sector
    Drop one CD - drops one combat drone in the sector
    Drop all CDs - drops the maximum possible number of combat drones in the sector
    Pick up CDs - picks up the maximum possible number of combat drones from the sector
    Drop full Mine Stack - drops the maximum possible number of mines in the sector
    Pick up Mines - picks up the maximum possible number of mines from the sector
  7. DOC:
    Documentation menuDocumentation - link to the game manual
    List of Knows Goods - displays the goods in the current game, as well as starting goods on planets
    Ship list - list of ships in the current game
    Weaponlist - list of weapons in the current game
    Get More Help - link to your psychiatrist, if he/she is not present, it takes you to the game forum
  8. SYS:
    System menuPreferences - takes you to the preferences screen
    Logout - exits the game

Game universe
There are 6 galaxies in the Merchant Empires universe:
  • Zycklirg space
  • Xollian space
  • K.E.A emporium
  • Mawlor dominion
  • Paragon sovereign space
  • Imperial space (also known as the Newbie galaxy)

All galaxies except Imperial space are 40x40 sectors in size (Imperial space is 30x30) and divided into 4 quadrants. They are connected with eachother with warps. Racial weapons and ships are only sold in racial galaxies.
Note: all players start in the newbie galaxy and work their way out of it (though nothing prevents them from leaving it immediately). Your base (if you build one) can then be transported into a racial galaxy. Note that *that* means a one-way trip. Also, usage of jump drives is not possible in the newbie galaxy.

About Us

Merchant Empires Universe was started in May of 2002. It is a fork of the original game as designed by Bryan Brunton and the continued efforts of the Open ME project. Merchant Empires has gone through several stages in the last 2 years. Here is a breakup of that history.

Screenshot The original development that started things off. This project started early in the year 2000 and since then has sparked a lot of imagination from developers world wide.  This version no longer exists nor is it support by Bryan Brunton today. You will be able to find the original setup located at sourceforge.net.

Screenshot The Open ME development that picked up after Bryan Brunton's original development. This project started early in the year 2001 and has undergone several upgrades that distinguish it from the original efforts of it's predecessor. You can play this game still today by visiting www.advancedpowers.com.

Screenshot This a development that is similar to the Open ME dev. It uses different ideas which are not implemented in the Advanced Powers dev and is constantly changing from week to week. You can play the game by visiting the site at dontpanic.dyndns.org

09/09/02: For any player who signed up recently with a Hotmail email account I apologize for the interruption in service. Hotmail doesnt seem to like to receive email from my server. So I have alidated every player to date with a hotmail account. So just go on in and create your player and if you are still having problems please email support@universerpg.homeip.net. Thank you all for your support

08/18/02: For all players who have signed up and not received a validation code, please visit the Retrieve Password Page to haveyour info sent to you. You will receive an email within 2 minutes. The reason you did not receive a password was mainly due to the email server being down.
The server has been stabilized.  Everytrything should be working now :). Enjoy!

What is OpenME?

Merchant Empires is originally written by Bryan Burton and is based on Space Merchants which in turn is based on TradeWars 2K.The OpenME project forked from Bryans code by the players and has been recoded in many parts and supplies an installable complete game platform.
The future holds many exciting features and system changes that will inevitably separate it from it's predecessors as a unique gaming experience. While still maintaining the ease of use and general availability through commonly available web technology.

Stellar Guard

Note:  This was an alliance that originated during the final days of Space Merchant.  In Merchant Empires, it became known as Stellar Pride while in TDZK it became known as KAOS.



They arose from the ashes of the great collapse. A collection of lost souls, merchants, military and brigands.

In the chaos this unlikey collection of pilots found each other and through each other found the strength to rise above the madness of societies collapse and become more than allies, They were bound together by blood and bound by honor.

Now generations later The Stellar Guard as they had become known were a nation of pilots within the seperate factions of TRI.

Stellar Guard Ranks 
Commander

Commander is the utmost highest rank a Stellar Guard can hope to attain. They lead, trade, fight and do all the paperwork. A commander’s signature is required to bind any minor or standard treaty, and a unanimous agreement is required to seal a major one.

Wing Commander

Tasked with leading wings into battle against hostile forces, Wing Commanders are effectively the combat leaders. Skilled in most or all trades of combat and barter, they are fit and authorized to officially negotiate to a limited extent as well.

Lt. Wing Cmdr

Tasked with assisting the wing commanders in their duties, the lieutenant wing commanders are fit and authorized to lead in the wing commanders’ absence as well. The LWC is competent, cool under fire and capable of quick thinking and decision-making.

Colonel

The colonel is a very busy person. Tasked with some administrative duty and trusted highly by all commanders, colonels are most responsible for not only a major’s duties, but for pilot-leadership relations. They are the pilots’ voice to the leadership.

Major

The major has not only proven competent in all fields of trade, profiteering and combat, but is also skilled and shows an amount of leadership ability. Majors are trusted to command in the absence of the wing commanders and are competent at negotiation.

Captain

A captain has proven him or herself not only competent in the battlefield, but also in trade. A skill or at least know-how in trade and profiteering is seen as a necessity for any officer of even mildly considerable rank in today’s navy.

1st Lt.

The 1st lieutenant has proven himself to be a competent soldier. Forming the backbone of the Stellar Guard, 1st Lieutenants are often the first in and the last out of a combat engagement.

2nd Lt.

Still somewhat green, 2nd lieutenants are numerous and somewhat skilled.

Ensign

What can be said of an ensign? Not much. These pilots are still quite wet behind the ears and are usually new to the squad or play very little Jumpgate. The duty of an ensign is the same as any other officer, however- combat, trade, honor.

Cadet

Cadets are new to the Stellar Guard, and are often yet to be completely trusted by their superiors. A cadet has but one role: To learn and absorb as much as possible so that they may one day better serve TRI and the Stellar Guard.

Awarded for saving any civilian. 

Crimson Heart

Awarded to any pilot who has been slain in battle five times during war.

Galactic Medal of Honor

Highest medal available to any pilot in the Stellar Guard. Awarded for extreme, arguably insane and suicidal bravery in the battlefield.

Get Well Soon Card

Awarded to any pilot who has been slain by another pilot in peacetime.

Hyperial’s Thanks

Awarded to any pilot instrumental in the protection of Hyperian territory.

Icefox’s Medallion of Explosives

Awarded to any pilot who has proven and admits to be a proud hothead, or was held back from assailing the crook who ‘stole’ his money by as many as five other Stellar Guard’s at any poker game.

Luck of the Negotiator

Awarded for averting a war via negotiation or quick thinking.

Mastery of Impact

Awarded to any pilot who has successfully mastered the delicate art of docking within his/hers 5 first hours of play.

Max’s Award of Insanity
Awarded to any pilot who has gambled more than ten thousand credits of his money away in bets of any kind. 

Max’s Award of Prudence
Awarded to any pilot who has lured others to gamble away more than ten thousand credits of their money in bets of any kind.

Medallion of Victory

The Medallion of Victory is awarded for every confirmed hostile kill that a Stellar Guard makes. We here in the Stellar Guard feel that every kill counts, and award this medal to show our gratitude for those that have helped preserve the Guard and TRI.

Octavia’s Thanks

Awarded to any pilot instrumental in the protection of Octavian territory.

OH MY GOD! YOU KILLED RAIDERR! Badge of Honor
This badge is awarded to any pilot who has downed Raiderr one or more times. Note this does not apply to disconnect, only registered TRI destructions.

Plutonium Cross

Awarded for bravery in the battlefield. Can also be awarded for peeling a hostile off of a fellow Stellar Guard, thereby saving him or her from destruction.

Proakis’ Applause

Awarded to any pilot who has managed to or helped to make more than fifty million credits for the Stellar Guard.

Quanos’ Thanks

Awarded to any pilot instrumental in the protection of Quantar territory.

Soria’s Thanks

Awarded to any pilot instrumental in the protection of Solrain territory.

Spirit of the Guard
Awarded to any pilot who by his/her actions promotes SG goals and community. This award requiers that a majority of the members agree the recipient deserves it.

Thanks of the Movie Stars
Awarded to any pilot who has been instrumental in the protection of a questionably insane celebrity or high-ranking official.

Thanks of the Stars

Awarded to any pilot instrumental in the protection of all factional territories.

The Purple People’s Thanks

Awarded to any pilot instrumental in the protection of those lovable squishy purple guys we all know- the Amananthi. 

TOW Specialist
Awarded to any pilot proving that he/she is expert at handling the command of a loaded TOW ship. That includes getting from point A to point B in a decent amount of time, dealing with fluxes and landing safely.
